Undergraduate Certificate of Screen Media

The Undergraduate Certificate of Screen Media provides pathways into further study or employment.

Upon completion of the course, you are eligible to gain direct entry into Trimester 2 of the Bachelor of Screen Media degree. The course provides you with 30 credit points of the 180 credit points required for the Bachelor of Screen Media qualification.

Alternatively, it will prepare you for entry-level and junior roles in the screen media and creative industries, covering visual storytelling, videography, camera operation, editing, sound design, to AI-enhanced creative production.

This course is designed to cover the fundamental skills and experiences needed in the exciting and fast-evolving world of screen media. You’ll learn from experts and start to build a range of practical, hands-on technical and creative skills. AI is integrated ethically and creatively to enhance both your creative production and theoretical learning, you’ll learn to use and experiment with these new tools and methods, and embrace change.

An Undergraduate Certificate of Screen Media is an accredited higher education qualification that covers the fundamentals of visual media. Ours takes one trimester, on campus or online and introduces you to the practical and creative side of screen media at a tertiary level. Eligible students may be able to use FEE-HELP for all or part of their tuition fees, subject to current eligibility requirements. The certificate earns 30 credit points towards the Bachelor of Screen Media.

This certificate may suit you if you’re interested in screen media and want to find out how far that interest goes. Some of our students have just finished school and want a creative career without committing three years to it right away. Others already have jobs in the industry, or film projects with friends and want to build formal technical skills for professional practice. At one trimester, this is a short entry-level qualification you can complete before deciding how far to take screen media.

Our lecturers work in the industry themselves, so you’ll learn each skill hands-on from someone who applies it in their own productions.

You can study the Undergraduate Certificate of Screen Media at our campus in South Melbourne or fully online. In person, you’ll spend your trimester working face-to-face with our lecturers and handling the equipment yourself. If travelling to South Melbourne isn’t feasible, you can complete the same accredited qualification through online learning from home.

No, this is an entry-level qualification. Our subjects start with the basics, so you can arrive without any camera experience. You’ll need to demonstrate English-language proficiency consistent with tertiary study and complete PSC’s current admission process, which may include a creative chat or 150-word statement.

You’ll learn to operate a camera, cut your footage together and design the sound for what you’ve shot. Visual storytelling connects each of those skills, so you’ll also practise choosing what a scene shows and how it should unfold. We integrate AI into your learning ethically and creatively, encouraging you to experiment with these tools while you develop your own working methods. Everything is hands-on, which means you’ll finish the trimester with screen media work you made yourself.

Yes, you have two clear pathways forward. Completing the certificate qualifies you for direct entry into Trimester 2 of the Bachelor of Screen Media, where your 30 credit points count towards the 180 that degree requires. The Diploma of Screen Media extends this pathway across two trimesters and 60 credit points in total. After completing the Certificate, you may be eligible to continue into Tier 2, subject to PSC’s current admission and credit requirements.

One trimester is the shortest screen media course we teach, so you can test your interest without a long time commitment. You’ll finish with an accredited qualification and foundational capabilities relevant to entry-level creative work or further study. The camera, editing and sound skills you develop can also support a wide range of creative projects and future study pathways.
